Royal Athletic Park was originally built for lacrosse. The Royal Victoria Athletic Association needed a place to play, and they secured the rights to land on Caledonia Avenue between Quadra and Cook streets for a field. They ceded the park to the city of Victoria in 1925. Since its inception, the field has been a multi-purpose facility, hosting football (Canadian and soccer) and baseball as well as lacrosse. After a fire damaged the grandstand in 1964, the stands were rebuilt in time for the centennial of Canadian confederation in 1967. The soccer pitch has seen significant matches over the last century including the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007, and the B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League play an exhibition at the park in August 2024.

For baseball, the grandstand is located in the southwest corner, as is common. A temporary outfield fence is in place, allowing for the football and soccer field to not encroach on the baseball infield. There is a separate press box and full grandstand for the rectangular sports down the first-base line, although uncovered grandstand seating extends along the entire first-base line (along Caledonia Avenue).

Since 2013, the primary tenant has been the Victoria HarbourCats of the West Coast League, a college summer league.
