Memorial Park

At the height of the post-war building boom in Rutherford's "West End", borough voters set aside a 26-acre tract to honor those who had fallen in the recent war. Rutherford Memorial Park was established by referendum in November 1949.

Much of the property had previously been owned by Gerald Tamblyn and was known to the locals as "Tamblyn's Woods". Some of the land was used for post-war settlement housing. Tamblyn, who always allowed local children to play on his land, was later honored when Rutherford Field, at Woodland and Delafield Avenues, was dedicated as Tamblyn Field in 1958.
