The Rotary nine clipped East Rutherford’s champion Vicky’s by a 9-1 count on Thursday at East Rutherford to win their way into the second round as Frank Pollara tossed a one-hitter at the title-winners from across the tracks and his mates found two Vicky hurlers for nine hits good for as many rounds.

They slapped the East Rutherford champs down in their first time at bat with a six-run rally which provided three times the runs Pollara needed to rack up his ninth pitching win of the season. He is unbeaten.

Jack Kreiling got on on an error to open the game, went to second on a passed ball and scored when Guesera banged Chichie Deven for a single. Hands followed with a double which sent Guesera to third. Pollara walked. Tantum struck out but Bob Dionisio weighed in with a double which cleared the bases and scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Charlie Wunner, who had walked and gone to second on the wild heave, scored on Len Baylor’s single.

Both sides scored in the second, Rutherford on successive singles by Pollara, Tantum and Dionisio. Rotary counted twice more in the top of fifth on three walks, a pair of stolen bases, an error and a brace of wild pitches.

Dionisio had three for four and Pollara two for two for the winners. Bill Smith replaced Deven on the mound for Vicky’s with two out in the first inning.

The game, called for 15 minutes in the first beause of rain, was halted for good at the end of five because of darkness.
