Kiwanis looked more like pennant contenders than cellar dwellers Friday as they crawled all over the Junior Chamber 11-2.

The Kiwanians started off their assault in the first frame when Tom Tanton tripled and came home when the third baseman failed to cover the bag on the throw-in from the outfield.

The JCC nine tied the score in the top of the third when Harold Schweizer singled to center field, stole second, and scored on Buddy Miller’s single through the infield.

Kiwanis fought back with two in their half of the third on a walk, followed by Tom Tanton’s homerun to left. They added another in the fourth when Alden Smith walked, went to third on a passed ball, and an infield out, and scored on Dennis Wengland’s fly to center.

The Jaycees, still in teh game, came back with a run of their own to make the score 4-2 in the fifth on Richie Butcher’s home run to center field.

But then the roof fell in.

The Jaycees committed four errors in one inning – more than they usually make in two games – and kicked in seven Kiwanis runs in the bottom of the fifth.

That big inning was featured by doubles off the bats of Alden Smith and Dennis Wengland.

Kiwanis played tight ball in the field, and their pitching was effective, as hurler Rye Alyea showed good control, whiffing eleven and walking only two. He was in command of the situation throughout.

The Jaycee attack was concentrated off the field against the umpire – and the attackers were a good deal older than the 12 year old Little League age limit.

As one spectator pointed out, one questionable strikeout can’t come close to making up nine unquestionable runs.
