Over in the other circuit, a running back-handed catch by centerfielder Bob Newhouse in the second inning robbed Bob Dziadosz of a game-tying homer and sparked the Elks to a 9-3 conquest of the Legion.
The Legion took a three-run lead in the first on Joe McGlynn’s two-out homer. The Elks promptly counted six in their half of the frame on singles by Newhouse and Lynch, Jimmy Corovillana’s double, a pair of passes and an error. Tom Vanderveer’s clutch single highlighted a three-run insurance rally in the fourth.
