Fighting hard to catch the league leading Rotary club, Kiwanis came from behind Monday afternoon to defeat Pastore 10-6 and stay neck and neck with the loop leaders.
A six run fifth inning did the damage for Kiwanis as D’Ziadosz and Usher doubled and Vanderveer clubbed out a triple to lead the way.
Kiwanis started off the afternoon’s scoring and for a time made the game look like a walk-away as three runs crossed the plate on one hit and three Pastore misplays. D’Ziadosz led off with a walk, and after Lefkowitz reached first on second sacker Tanton’s error, Ross was walked to load the sacks.
Usher singled bringing D’Ziadosz home, which set the stage for a double misplay by Pastore. Burns reached first on a fielder’s choice as he forced Ross at third, but in trying for the double play a run came home as the throw went wild to home. The catcher tried to nab Burns legging for second on the misplay and a second run scored on the throw.
Reardon ended the inning by popping into a double play when Tanton pulled down his high fly to the right of second. Tanton threw to third and when Burns tried to come home on the throw, third sacker Lewis caught him easily at the plate.
Pastore tied the contest in the third as Alverez walked, Sloan singled, and Bull bunted for a single past the mound bringing in one run. Lambi drew a free pass to load the bases and both lead runners tallied when Lewis forced Lambi at second, as Kiwanis couldn’t make the attempted double play.
The Kiwanis went back into the lead in their fourth as Wisloff came home on Dorman’s single and a fly to center, but Pastore took it right back again by tallying a pair in their half of the fourth.
Wunner, Porter and Sloan one after another, and Bull was on via center fielder’s error to spark the rally.
Kiwanis wrapped the game up in the fifth, though, as they put together four singles, a walk, and four errors to bring across six runs and the win.
Pastore answered back with a single tally in their half of the sixth as DeCarlo crossed the plate without the aid of a hit, but, after Kiwanis had waived their batting time in the sixth to let the game be completed before it became too dark, Pastore was unable to do anything as the Kiwanis registered their fourth win of the Little League season.
Monday’s game was marked by disputes between the umpires and team managers. Joe Dressel, who started as umpire behind the plate, left the game after a long discussion with the Kiwanis manager, and was replaced by Eldon Brown, who had been making the calls on the bases.
Both umpires turned in fine jobs and are to be congratulated on the way they handled the ball game.
