Last Thursday the big game of the week was played, as the Rotary edged the Kiwanis nine 5-4 to break the first place deadlock between the two clubs and take unchallenged possession of the top spot.

Scoring all five tallies in the sixth inning, the Rotary pulled out of the fire what had looked like a sure Kiwanis victory, as the Kiwanians, with a single marker in the first and three more in the fourth looked to be in control of the game.

Two home runs, off the bats of Gene Van Biert and Martin Sherry sparked the five run Rotary rally, as Van Biert brought a pair of runners ahead of him; and Sherry batted in the game tying and scored the game winning tally.

D’Ziadosz’s circuit clout from the lead-off spot in the first frame jumped Kiwanis off to an early lead, and in the third a hit batsman, a single, a walk, and a pair of errors made the margin 4-0.

That set the stage for the Rotary rally. Alyea was on via an error at second but was forced by Cole. Nelson walked and Van Biert homered to cut the Kiwanis lead to 4-3. Floyd reached first on Burns’ error and then Sherry clubbed the game-winning round tripper.

D’Ziadosz was outstanding stickman of the day, as he went two for two for Kiwanis, while Van Biert gave up only three hits in his winning Rotary mound effort and whiffed ten batters. He walked two.
