State Highways of New Jersey

The original NJ 4 legislation called for a route that extended from the George Washington Bridge to Paterson and then down through Woodbridge, but the section between Paterson and Woodbridge was never built. A further bypass was proposed as a parkway; a 13-mile stretch between Woodbridge and Union was built by the State Highway Commission through 1952, along with a Toms River bypass and a new bridge over the Mullica River. All three sections are now part of the Garden State Parkway, and US 9 also utilizes the two southern sections on a toll-free basis. The original road through Toms River is now NJ 166, while the remaining segments that led to the old Mullica River bridge form NJ 167.

The NJ 4 designation was removed from US 9 in 1953, when route number duplications (with the exception of brief concurrencies) were eliminated from the state highway system. Since US 9 did not overlay the Paterson-to-Fort Lee section, that remains as NJ 4.

When the Cape May-to-Lewes, Del. ferry was instituted, US 9 was extended over a new road leading to the ferry landing in Lower Township, and on into Delaware, ending at US 13. The old road to Cape May became NJ 109.

Beginning in Woodbridge, US 9 is concurrent with US 1 for just over 30 miles, to a point near the east end of the George Washington Bridge just inside New York. At that point, US 9 uses 178 Street (eastbound) and 179 Street (westbound) to Broadway, while US 1 continues eastward on the Trans-Manhattan and Cross Bronx expressways (also designated I-95) to Webster Avenue. The total length of US 9 in New Jersey is 166.34 miles, but only the southernmost 136.38 miles are logged here. The 29.96-mile concurrency with US 1, commonly called “1 & 9” and shown on some highway shields as “1-9”, is logged on that highway’s page.
